- Mental Mathematics Video Description and Examples
Here you can view an example of a page of the NumberSense Mental Mathematics videos which provide 25 mental mathematics questions per day (for Grades 1 to 3, and beyond).
In these example videos, you will notice that the questions are asked in such a way that they should reveal certain patterns that children need to discover.
In this video, there are dedicated intervals in which to ask the children questions such as, “What do you notice?” or “Can you explain how you got your answer?” These questions are to prompt the children to think about and reflect on their answers. The children’s ability to reflect on their own thinking is critical during the learning process. This is a skill that needs to be fostered by the teacher or parent. As the children gain confidence in their own ability, teachers and parents should encourage them to verbalise their understanding and explain their thinking.
